MIROSLAV NAVRÁTIL
PLASTIC CHAIR, 1959

Czechoslovakia was also swept up in the craze for moulded plastic, heralded by Charles Eames and his wife Ray in 1948, when they exhibited their first fibreglass chaise longue at the Low Cost Furniture exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Navrátil’s chair does not deny their influence, but there are important differences – individual legs can be unscrewed, and the shape of the seat anticipates the famous Prague tram seat.
